The Renal Unit works closely with the Wolverhampton and other local diabetes services to provide care for those people whose kidneys are starting to fail. It provides services for a total catchment population of approximately 750,000, including Wolverhampton, Walsall and parts of South Staffordshire and Shropshire.

The renal unit provides dialysis facilities for about approximately 340 chronic patients. 260 patients are on haemodialysis and 70 on peritoneal dialysis. Emergency haemodialysis facilities are located on the New Cross hospital site, with satellite haemodialysis facilities available for chronic stable patients at Walsall, Tipton and Cannock.

In addition, we look after 100 patients with renal transplants, and there is a full service available to patients with chronic renal failure, not yet on dialysis. Plasma exchange is also provided through the renal unit. Weekly out patients are also run at Walsall Manor Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital.
