Frequently Asked Questions
Can you inject anywhere else apart from the Abdomen?
Yes - Arms and Legs

Do you need to change injection sites?
Yes - this is to avoid fatty lumps forming which, though
not harmful in themselves, prevent insulin being used properly.

Does the skin need any special treatment before hand?
No you don't need to clean the skin with antiseptic -
normal hygiene bathing or showering and hand washing is all that is required.
Should the needle be left in longer if injecting a larger
dose?
Yes count to 10 if more than 30 units are injected.
Does the site of the injection bleed?
Yes occasionally. There are millions of capillaries (tiny
blood vessels) under the skin which inevitably will be pierced some
times. Bleeding should be stopped by finger pressure.
What about bruising?
Yes, again because of the blood vessels, bruising might
occur. One should avoid injecting in the area until the bruising gone
and minimise the risk by changing the needle prior to every injection.
Can the Abdomen be used during pregnancy?
Yes, the needle doesn't go near the baby
How often do you inject?
Most people inject twice daily, though this may vary.
How are needles disposed of hygienically?
Cut needle using the safe clip which is prescribed by
the doctor.

Place stubs in a suitable container, e.g. Bleach bottle
- screw top. Dispose with household waste.
Should insulin be kept in a fridge?
Insulin should be stored between 4 - 8 deg C in fridge.

However the current pen should be kept at room temperature
for up to 1 month. insulin should never exceed 25 deg C and therefore
avoid direct sunlight. Store insulin out of reach of children.
What about holidays?
A cool bag available on mail order or from chemists,
should be used to store insulin when traveling.

Is there any indication that the correct dose is dispensed?

The pens are very accurate and the dose dialled will
be delivered. In addition the barrel of the pen has a gauge which indicates
volume of insulin remaining in the pen. It is important to ensure plunger
is not depressed before needle is inserted in to the skin.
